Things to do in Kamakura

The number of temples in Kamakura is almost innumerable. But even here there are a few favorites that should be on every list.

#1 Kōtoku-in

Kōtoku-in is probably the main reason why most visitors make their way to Kamakura. It is here that the statue of the Great Buddha can be found. And by big, I actually mean huge! A whole 13.35 m tall to be exact. It is very important to see when the temple closes its doors. So you do not stand like us in front of closed doors.

#2 Hadedera temple

Hadedera Temple is located on the way to the Great Buddha and is very close. The entrance fee of 300 ¥ is worth it. The almost $2.50 investment is worth it to look at the beautiful temple complex and the fantastically beautiful koi fish on site.

#3 Osaki Park

Osaki Park also offers a beautiful view of the beautiful Mount Fuji from a distance.

#4 Hokokuji temple

Hokokuji temple is famous and popular mainly because of the bamboo forest. Since it is located on the other side of Kamakura, you will need to plan your schedule well for this.

How to visit Kamakura

To get to Kamakura, it’s best to take a train from Tokyo and enjoy a journey of just under an hour and a half. Immediately after arriving at Kamakura station, you will see some directional arrows that will lead you to the temple of your choice.

Most temples are about a 10-15 minute walk, but the journey is the destination. So just walking to the temples is worth the visit. This city is the complete opposite of Tokyo. The streets are narrow, the houses small. Quite a nice change from the urban jungle.
