4 Days in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest. As mystical as they may be, they are breathtaking at the same time. Almost nowhere in the world today can you get as close to authentic nature as here. Whether it’s watching parrots, fishing for piranhas, searching for monkeys, tracking down creepy-crawlies, learning natural medicine, or simply being at one with nature. All of this is the Amazon Rainforest of Peru.

Once you arrive in the Amazon Rainforest of Peru, there are many opportunities to discover them. Due to the size, undiscovered areas, and danger present in places, it is strongly recommended to take a guided tour and explore the vast green space with a guide. Personally, I did my four-day stay in the Lungs of the World at Posada Amazonas and can highly recommend it! Warm is also the motto here, especially because of the dry season.

Several planes fly daily from Lima and Cusco to Puerto Maldonado, which is also where the whole adventure starts from. Here you will be picked up by the guide, after which many things will be explained on the bus towards the river while you snack on local fruits. During the trip you will pass many villages, where probably everyone wonders full of admiration:

People really live there?

Housed in various wooden barracks, the locals have built residential communities and villages. The beauty of the whole thing is that these seem to be much happier with less than often live in abundance.

A Bug's Life (For Night Crawler)

Especially in the Amazon Rainforest, you will quickly realize that the animal kingdom makes its own rules. While birds make their rounds during the day, at night certain monkey species make their own unique sounds to mark their territory. Many insect species, such as spiders, ants and beetles, are also often only active at night. That’s why you have to go into the jungle after sunset to observe them.

Often we share the thought that everything sleeps at night. This is not so, because the a bug’s life no night rest and the small creatures give everything of themselves under moonlight. An experience full of new impressions that will make you fall asleep perfectly afterwards.

Piranhas fishing in the Amazon Rainforest

Fishing is said to be like therapy for many people. A time-out during which the fishing rod is swung into the water to wait for one to bite.

Not with the piranhas!

These small, almost inconspicuous fish eat away all the bait at an extreme speed. If you really manage to pull the rod out of the water in this short time, you have to act at the perfect moment.

By the way, piranhas are by nature so knit that they do not attack people just because they are in the water. If you have a wound and the small fish could taste blood, it is strongly discouraged to go into the water.

In the early morning hours you will go by catamaran into the rivers of the Amazon Rainforest. You will be surrounded on all sides by crocodiles, beavers and exotic bird species. Again, the motto is not to be afraid. Even if the catamaran actually consists of only two canoes with a large wooden plate. It is good to float with it on the water and enjoy the beautiful moments.

Bird watching in early morning hours

Not much could be better than watching animals that feel unobserved! So in the Amazon Rainforest, in the early morning hours and just after sunrise, you can go with the guide to a nearest hut and quietly watch wonderful parrots in their daily routine. Be it how they cuddle, play or fight with each other.

Almost like in a human relationship. 😉

Watching this natural spectacle live and up close is better than any documentary.

Peruvian Medicine Naturopathy

Visiting a Peruvian farm full of natural medicine, you will quickly be amazed at how the native shamans make medicine with the help of numerous plants. During the process, they will explain how remedies are obtained through the plants. At the end of the execution, there will be a casual, fun toast to health and a taste of some of the natural products on site.

The lodge in harmony with nature

The special thing about the whole visit to the Amazon Rainforest, besides the numerous adventures, is the lodge itself. Here you sleep in the heart of the jungle with missing walls under the mosquito net. Even if it may seem a bit strange at the beginning to have a curtain instead of doors and open walls instead of windows. These are exactly the things that make the place special.

I mean, what could be better than lifting your head while relaxing and seeing monkeys swinging overhead. After a great day, you fall asleep to the chirping of the exotic animals, while the morning starts with loud monkey noises.

Some places in this world are so far away that it is difficult to reach. Unfortunately, the Amazon Rainforest is one of them. We had to take several flights to finally arrive in Amazon Rainforest. Our flight route looked something like this: Zurich – Madrid – Lima – Cusco – Puerto Maldonado (Amazon Rainforest). In Cusco we even had to stay on the plane, because shortly after landing it took off again towards Amazon Rainforest.

Finally arrived, we were picked up by the shuttle bus, driven around for about an hour before it was on a small boat towards the accommodation.
