Personal Thoughts

Ah Sicily! We had heard so many good things about the island, that we finally decided to convince ourselves of the uniqueness of it, and planned a long-awaited 14-day journey.

At first we wondered how to organize our time in Sicily. Whether to pack every day in the car and change hotel. Or maybe it would be better to situate ourselves in two places on the island and make excursions to the most beautiful places from there.

In the end, we opted for two bases of accommodation, which is why we also divided this post into two parts: Palermo region and Catania region. In our opinion this was the best solution, thanks to which we avoided the constant change of accommodation and didn’t have to leave our belonging unattended in our car.

All the places in this post will also be in the order in which we visited them, which we hope will make it easier for you to plan your vacation on the magnificent island of Sicily.

Tip: Assuming you start in Palermo, it is ideal to fly back home from Catania. That way you can make the most of your days and don’t need to drive back on your last day.

Things to do in Sicily

The first part covers destinations in the north-western area of Sicily. These can best be reached from Palermo as a day trip.

Day 1-3:

#1 Palermo

Sicily’s capital – Palermo! A unique place full of cultural mix, not only in terms of its residents, but also food and amazing monuments. Even the names of some streets are written in several languages, Italian and Arabic being only two of three. Palermo next to its beautiful churches and lively markets is a place with an amazing gastronomic base, where once again you can experience a cultural and delicious mix.

Even though the Mafia of Sicily has certainly made its mark on the country’s reputation, it has meant a great deal of fear and insecurity for its inhabitants. Nowadays, you don’t notice much of that as a tourist. There is even an anti-mafia movement going on throughout the city, so it’s perfectly safe here.

Tip: Take the arrival day slow, arrive safely, get to know the neighbourhood and go out for a delicious Italian meal. Plan at least two full days for Palermo, as there is definitely plenty to see.

Parking: Palermo is a large and crowded city, so moving around the center by car can be difficult. Keep in mind that you can easily get everywhere on foot, so it’s best to leave your car in one of the parking garages close to your accommodation.

– Antico Mercato del Capo & Ballaro Mercato Storico

Start your day early and head to the popular among locals and tourists alike Antico Mercato del Capo or Ballaro Mercato Storico, two bustling street markets full of food and souvenirs for loved ones.

The facade of the cathedral is beautifully and richly decorated, while the interior is rather modest, but with a nice mosaic floor, wooden carved ceilings and a richly decorated altar.

Entrance to the cathedral costs $2.20 (€2) per person.

The temple or actually its remains are the last stop on your Syracuse tour. Built in the 6th century BC, the once Greek temple of Apollo was later transformed into a Byzantine Church, an Islamic mosque and again into a church. This is probably the oldest Doric temple in Sicily. There is not much left on the site, but it is worth to take a look or two on it.

Day 11:

#9 Savoca

If you are a fan of The Godfather movies  then we probably don’t need to introduce you to this place. Savoca, located on a hill, is where the famous scenes in the Vitteli bar and in front of the San Nicolò church, among others, were filmed.

And although the bar no longer looks like it did in the movie, it is definitely a place worth visiting if you want to feel like the titular Godfather. Inside of the bar you can still grab something to drink, although prices are a bit higher then in other cafes. Don’t miss to visit the small museum inside with many pictures which were taken during filming of The Godfather.

Apart from the famous bar, Savoca doesn’t have much more to offer. In walking distance is also the church of San Nicolò, where Michael Corleone in The Godfather gets married to his love Apollonia.

The town of Savoca has changed a bit, with souvenir stores and a few restaurants, but you will still encounter old, charming buildings and beautiful views, especially from Piazza Fossia, the main square in Savoca.

Parking: Park your car at nearby parking at Via Pieta street. From there you just need to climb several stairs, and you will be in the small city center of Savoca.

Day 12:

#10 Taormina

Called the pearl of Sicily, Taormina is certainly the most beautiful town on the island. Busting with colorful buildings, with some nice churches, and wonderful views of the sea, it has become one of the most popular towns in Sicily.

Its popularity in recent times Taormina has increased even more through the TV series White Lotus which was filmed, among others locations, in one of the local hotels. The streets of Taormina although charming will certainly be full of tourists during your visit, so it’s worth getting up an hour or two earlier to enjoy the city without the throngs of tourists.

Parking: Taormina is best visited on foot, so leave your car at Porta Catania Parking, and start exploring from there. It is located just few steps away form the first location mentioned in this blog post, but somewhat further from the beach.

Warning: There has been a big scam going on for years at the toll houses in the direction of Taormina. You will be asked to pay €5 by seemingly officially dressed ladies where you would normally only get a ticket. Smile friendly, followed by a ‘No’ and take the ticket from them. You obviously only have to pay as soon as you leave the motorway, and not when you enter.

How to visit Sicily

When traveling to Sicily, you can choose from several available options. It all depends on your tastes, and whether you are already on the mainland in Italy, or traveling to Sicily from another country. Below you can get acquainted with several means of transportation to this magnificent island.

By Airplane

The easiest way to get to the island is, of course, by airplane. Sicily has several airports, but if you are interested in a road trip as proposed above, choose a flight to Palermo and departure from Catania. This way you will avoid a few extra hours in the car before departure.

By Car

If you want to visit Sicily during your road trip through Italy, it’s definitely a great option. However, since Sicily is located far south, the journey there will be long.

By Ferry

If you’re already on mainland Italy and it’s from there you’ll be traveling to Sicily, you can use the ferry connections to reach the island. On the mainland, you will board the ferry in Villa San Giovanni and disembark in Messina in Sicily.

By Train

The last option for getting to Sicily is by train. It goes from several places on the mainland to several places on the island. By train, you will also board the ferry in Villa San Giovanni and disembark in Messina in Sicily, just as you would by car on the mainland.

Getting around Sicily

Car

In our opinion, the best means of transportation to visit Sicily is by car. With your own vehicle, you’ll be able to get to all the aforementioned places in peace and on your own time. Although drivers in Sicily can be a bit chaotic and unpredictable, it is the fastest mode of transportation on the island. Remember to have your eyes in the back of your head and drive carefully.

If you want to rent a car in Sicily we strongly recommend you to book with Sicily by Car company. During our trip in Sicily we didn’t have the slightest problem neither with the car nor with the car provider.

Tip: We strongly recommend booking fully comprehensive insurance when renting a car in Sicily.

Bus / Train

Another two options for traveling around Sicily is by train or bus. If for some reason you decide to use this mode of transport to get to the above-mentioned places may be somewhat difficult, but not impossible.

Unfortunately, in this case the travel time between destinations may be longer and with that you probably will be able to visit less places.

Safety in Sicily

Sicily used to have a problem with the mafia, while this did not and does not have much impact on tourists visiting the island. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about that at all.

Generally said, in crowded places beware of pickpockets and keep your belongings close to you. Also, don’t leave anything of value in your car, no matter if it’s in plain sight or not, and whether it’s night or day.

Best time to visit Sicily

Sicily is a truly captivating and beautiful destination. To fully appreciate its charm, it’s best to plan your visit during the warmer months of the year.

From April to May and from October to November, the temperatures in Sicily are pleasantly warm, and the number of tourists is relatively low, making these seasons one of the most enjoyable times to explore the island.

You can also visit Sicily between June and September, but keep in mind that summers can be extremely hot. This is also the peak tourist season, so you may encounter larger crowds and longer waiting times at popular attractions.

Best Places to Visit in Sicily, Italy (2-Week Road Trip)

Where to stay in Sicily

As mentioned at the beginning, in our opinion, it is best to stay in two places during your trip to Sicily. This will allow you to avoid constantly packing and changing hotels. Additionally, it will allow you to avoid constantly leaving your luggage in the car (due to different check-out times from the previous hotel or Airbnb and check-in at the next one).

Therefore, choose one hotel or Airbnb in the Palermo region and one in the Catania region if you like lively streets full of tourists, but also a large gastronomic base. However, if you like peace and quiet, opt for accommodation in one of the smaller towns close to these two major cities.

How long to stay in Sicily

To visit all of the above-mentioned places, plan 2 weeks of sightseeing. If you only have seven days to visit Sicily, focus on only one part of the island, choosing either the Palermo or Catania region.

Keep in mind, however, that if the car is not your means of transportation, you will have to plan more time for the commute, and thus you may not happen to see all the places mentioned above.
