North Island, New Zealand: 17 Best Places to Visit (1 Month Itinerary)

Welcome to New Zealand! One of the most beautiful countries to experience! Full of magnificent lakes, beaches, waterfalls, rock formations, sharp peaks, glaciers and so much more. New Zealand has to offer absolutely everything for nature seekers.

New Zealand, otherwise known as Aotearoa is an island country with over 700 islands, the two main ones being the North Island and the South Island, and it is known for the beautiful Maori culture. The first settlers were Polynesians who developed a distinctive Maori culture. Currently, however, they are a minority, since most of people nowadays living in New Zealand are of European descent.

We spent a whole month in New Zealand and discovered the most beautiful places with our campervan. In this article we will cover the best places on the North Island. Make sure you also discover the best places on the South Island of New Zealand.

Personal thoughts

Before coming to New Zealand we didn’t know much about it, although soon enough we realised that Aotearoa is one of a kind, beautiful and interesting country. Famous for its amazing nature and Maori culture often can leave you speechless.

The unique landscape of New Zealand has been used as a film set for various Hollywood productions, including the ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Hobbit’ movies.

Isn’t this convincing enough?

We were fortunate enough to visit both main islands – South Island and North Island of New Zealand. Our initial plan was to travel around for a month, but we quickly realised that we will not be able to see everything on our list within this time period, so we will have to go back one day. 🙂

We could go on for at least a few more paragraphs about how special New Zealand is, but it’s time for you to experience how amazing this country is and why it holds a special place in our hearts.

Fun fact: The original name of New Zealand „Aotearoa“ means „Long White Cloud“.

Things to do on North Island, New Zealand

#1 Wellington

Coming from the South Island, Wellington will be the first place you will visit. The capital and third largest city in New Zealand with a population of up to 200,000 is located at the bottom of the North Island.

Wellington can be reached by plane, as there is an airport in the city that handles international flights, but also by ferry from Pickton, which is located on the South Island of New Zealand.

Start your day with a stroll on the Wellington Waterfront – at marina with a promenade which is perfect for a stroll, or have a coffee in one of the cafes overlooking the coast. If you prefer to start your day in the middle of nature, Mt Victoria Lookout will be an ideal green place which provides great views of the city.

Take a ride on cute, red cable car. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office by the cable car. It’s best to buy a one-way ticket and return to the city on your feet via the Botanic Gardens, entry to which is free.

For museum fans, Wellington offers the wonderful Te Papa museum, while for Lord Of The Rings fans there is the Weta Workshop where you can admire the costumes used in the production of the LOTR movies.

#2 Desert Road

Running across Rangipo’s Desert – Desert Road, is a remote 63 kilometer road winding through the middle of unproductive lands. The place is deserted, and the weather can change dramatically very quickly, but the views here are epic.

That’s why this place was also the set for some scenes in „Lord of the Rings“. Along the way, you’ll enjoy amazing views of Tongariro National Park’s volcanoes.

Travel time: 4h 40min

#3 Tongariro National Park

Tongariro is the oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage area in New Zealand, and it is one of only three World Heritage Sites in New Zealand, recognized for its unique cultural and natural heritage.

The park is home to some of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscapes, and as many as three volcanoes are located here: Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. All three are still active, with the first two being two of the most active composite volcanoes in the world.

Travel time: 1h 25min

There are several trails in Tongariro National Park that can be hiked by intermediate hikers, such as the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Taranaki Falls Track and Silica Rapids Track, or by more advanced hikers, such as the Tongariro Northern Circuit and Round the Mountain track.

#4 Taranaki Falls

Located in the beautiful Tonrariro National Park, Taranaki Falls is a great place for a short 2-hour hike. The way to get to the falls is easy, and not too intensive. During the hike you will not only encounter magnificent views of vast expanses, charming streams and mighty waterfalls, but also amazing vegetation that has adapted to the atmospheric conditions of this place.

Wandering through these amazing, raw and open spaces will make you feel like you are in a fairy tale or an amazing nature movie.

#5 Egmont National Park

Created in 1881, Egmont National Park is the second national park in New Zealand, and is located on the western coast of New Zealand’s North Island. This beautiful park covers three volcanic cones: Mount Taranaki and its slopes, Pouakai and Kaitake.

Egmont is an amazing park abundant with great and easy trails like Kamahi Loop Track, Track to Dawson Falls, or Wilkies Pools Loop Trac, or those requiring a bit more effort like Mangorei Track to Pouakai Tarns, where you can see one of the most popular sights on the North Island of New Zealand.

Travel time: 3h 50min

#6 Rouakai Circuit Reflecive Tarn

One of the most beautiful places in the area – Reflective Tarn, is an amazing place definitely worth the effort and dedication. The destination of the trek is a small tarn in which Taranaki Mountain is reflected.

The hike to get to Reflective Tarn is quite intense and lasts with breaks of 2 to 3 hours, but like most places in New Zealand it is worth the effort. The first part of the hike leads through a magnificent green forest, then through a completely open space to finally reward us with heaven-like views. And although the goal of the trek is amazing, the road leading to it is equally epic.

Travel time: 2-3h (hike)

The most beautiful views begin right after you pass the hut. There is nothing more in this place but grass, and wooden footbridge but the views will leave you speechless, and the view of Taranaki Mountain is absolutely amazing. With a bit of luck, the wind will stop blowing and your eyes will see the reflection of the mountain in a small tarn located right at its foot.

Remember that the weather here likes to change, and there is quite a strong wind on the mountain, so it is worth taking with you several layers of clothes for changing, as well as water and snacks.

If you are going on a longer trek, it is possible to book accommodation at the Pouakai Hut, but this must be done in advance, and everything you need such as sleeping bag, clothing, and food you must bring on your own back.

#7 Three Sisters and Elephant Rock Formations

Located on an amazing black beach, the Three Sisters and Elephant Rock formations are another must-see on your list while traveling in the North Island of New Zealand. The Three Sisters used to be four before, unfortunately one of them collapsed due to the strong impact of the sea, the entire beach is surrounded by epic cliffs.

Of course, this place is best visited during the low tide, as it is then possible not only to see these rock formations in the first place, but also to stroll along the black beach, which at times looks like another planet. Before traveling to this place, be sure to check when it’s low tide, and wear trekking shoes, because at the very beginning, at the entrance to the beach, the ground is kind of tarry and very slippery.

Travel time: 1h 10min

Elephant Rock is equally magnificent and majestic, unfortunately, however, like one of the sisters which was destroyed by the sea, the elephant lost its trunk because of it.

Three Sisters and The Elephant Rock is one of the most amazing places on the North Island of New Zealand. Beside this on the beach you can meet the Vairable Oystercatcher (Tōrea Pango) wading in the mud.

#8 Marokopa Falls

Marokopa Falls a great plan for a perfect morning. Not only because the short 10-minute walk through the forest is rewarded with views of the 35-meter waterfall, but also because in the early morning there is a high probability that you will have this beautiful place exclusively.

And although access to the pool at the waterfall is unfortunately not possible at the moment, just admiring the waterfall from afar, is also a pleasant option. Marokopa Waterfall is located in the course of the river of the same name, which flows into the Tasman Sea about 26 km behind the waterfall.

#9 Bridal Veils Falls

Another waterfall which is definitely worth visiting, is the 55m high Bridal Veils waterfall. The waterfall can be admired from as many as four lookout points, but it’s hard to choose the best one.

The first view point is located where the waterfall begins to fall, that is, at a height of about 55m, and getting to it is very easy and takes only about 10 minutes. The second view point is a bit further away from the waterfall, but thanks to this you can observe it in all its glory, including the pool that is located at its base and the lush vegetation surrounding the waterfall.

Travel time: 1h 45min

The third lookout point is again located closer to the waterfall, which can be admired through the surrounding vegetation, reaching it takes another 10 minutes down the steps.

The fourth and final lookout point is located at the very base of the waterfall, by the pool into which the waterfall flows. This is the most crowded place from which you can admire the entire waterfall and the pool. Unfortunately, it is not allowed to swim in the pool by the waterfall.

#10 Huka Falls

The next destination on this trip should be Huka Falls, because of its easy access it is one of the most popular places in New Zealand. But don’t let the number of tourists scare you away, because Houka Falls is a magnificent waterfall with turquoise water and an incredibly strong current.

You can admire the waterfall from several view points and a bridge, or book an boat tour to the waterfall’s ending. And if you’re lucky enough you’ll also meet another of New Zealand’s native birds here – the Fantail (Pīwakawaka).

#11 Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Get your tissues and mints ready, because you’re about to visit one of the stinkiest places in New Zealand! Yes, you read right, Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is one of those places you can’t say it smelled fresh and nice, because the place has a very specific and not very pleasant rotten egg smell. Wai-O-Tapu is an active geothermal area, characterized by bubbling mud, steaming earth, huge volcanic craters and vast views.

Travel time: 35min

In addition to this, you will also encounter tinted pools in Thermal Wonderland. Called Champagne Pool. Their characteristic feature is the yellow/orange color and steam, as water temperatures here reach up to 73 degrees celcius.

There are special paths where you can take a walk through the bubbling mud, and there are three options you can choose from: a 45-minute, 60-minute or 90-minute walk. Everything is also very nicely marked, so it is really easy to stroll around. All this for an entrance price of about $25 (NZD 45) per person.

#12 Carters of the Moon

The previously sedated Craters of The Moon came to life in the 1950s, as water levels were altered through the operation of a nearby power plant. A wooden boardwalk winds through the lunar landscape of the geothermal area leading past steaming vents and geysers (the smell is just as „pleasant“ as in Wai-O-Tapu). During the walk you will also encounter bubbling mud pools.

Travel time: 40min

new zealand north island

The temperature of the water in some places reaches up to 90 degrees celsius, so it is very important to stay on the designated path. Because although sometimes you can’t see it, under a thin layer of earth there may be a crater with hot water.

In Craters of the Moon, despite the temperatures, you can also encounter interesting vegetation that has adapted to the prevailing conditions, as well as amazing birds living in New Zealand, like the Californian Quil.

The entire tour takes about an hour, and entry to the area costs starting from $5.50 (NZD 10) per person.

#13 Whakarewarewa – The Living Maori Village

To fully understand New Zealand and people living in this amazing country, it is  important to learn about their history and customs. One place you should definitely visit is Whakarewarewa Maori Village, the only living geothermal Maori village.

At Whakarewarewa Valley you will learn about the unique culture and heritage of the Maori people. See the boiling hot pools where meals are cooked and bubbling mud, and learn how the residents use and respect the ever-changing forces beneath their land.

More than 200 years ago, the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people opened the gates of their village to tourists from around the world, sharing their way of life.

#14 Hobbiton

What would a trip to New Zealand be without visiting one of the country’s most popular destinations – Hobbiton?

For fans of „The Lord of the Rings“ and „The Hobbit“ trilogies this is probably a „must see place“. However, those who have not yet seen the adventures of the famous Hobbits also will find something for themselves here, as the village is simply charming, and the place in which it is located is green and beautiful.

Travel time: 1h

Unfortunately there is no option to visit this place on your own, but there are organized guided tours on site. Everything is super organized and the guides have a great knowledge of the film and Hobbiton itself.

Buy your Hobbiton tickets in advance, as they sell out really fast. If you’re not exactly sure about the day of your visit to Hobbiton, remember that even after booking, it is possible to reschedule by a few days.

#15 Tawharanui Regional Park

This beautiful park, is best known for its over three-kilometer long white sand beach. It is an ideal place for surfing or swimming on a sunny day. But even when the weather is not so good, or it’s a bit colder, this beach is a great place for a walk or jog.

Besides, the beach is scattered with rocks and pebbles covered with sea life, and the green glades next to the beach are an ideal place for a picnic or a walk among the beautiful trees.

Travel time: 3h

An alert ear will hear, and a keen eye will also spot here another native New Zealand bird – the amazing Tui, which chirp beautifully, and its appearance is characterized by interesting colors and a white tuft on its neck.

#16 Piha Beach

The North Island roadtrip couldn’t have ended more epic than at Piha Beach. This is another one of those amazing and unforgettable beaches with black sand and rough seas. Even if the weather conditions don’t encourage swimming Piha Beach is the perfect place for a walk, especially at sunset when the rock on the beach is illuminated by the setting sun and looks like it is made of gold.

Walk, run, dip your feet in the cold water, look at the amazing rock formations and remember this place forever.

#17 Auckland

Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand and is home to as much as a third of the country’s population, or some 1.6 million residents. And while one might expect the country’s largest city to be its capital, this time is different.

Located between the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean city, got his nickname because of many yachts and boats – Sail City.  So one of the must-visit spots when walking around Auckland is the harbor where you can admire the yachts floating on the water. It is said that one in three families in Auckland has its own boat.

For a panoramic view of the city, climb the highest volcanic cone in Auckland – Mt. Eden, from where there are great views of the city. If you don’t have enough views from the top, Victoria Mountain will be another interesting place to visit, from which you can also admire the city, as well as the Rangitoto volcano.

For art lovers, Auckland offers the magnificent Auckland Art Gallery, where a beautiful exhibition of Maori portraits deserves special attention, and interesting War Museum.

Last but not least is the city’s tallest building, the Sky Tower, which also offers amazing views of Auckland.

Getting around North Island, New Zealand

The best way to explore New Zealand? Of course, similarly to Australia – by campervan! It will allow you incredible freedom, the feeling of „wind in your hair“, and the opportunity to sleep in a different place every day and wake up every day in a different nature setting.

Yes, we understand that not everyone has experience in traveling by campervan (neither did we), not for everyone it may be comfortable, but exactly in New Zealand it seems to us an absolute necessity.

There is nothing more wonderful than opening the window curtain and admiring the amazing and unforgettable views, and on top of that, a different one every day. Cooking dinners outdoors and having a tiny house on wheels with you at all times couldn’t be more exciting!

The advantages of traveling in a campervan could be listed here and we could rave about this form of travel for a long time, but ultimately the choice is up to you, dear traveler. This post can only help you make your decision.

If you decide that camping is not something you want to experience, the other option is to rent a car and sleep in hotels, motels or motor stays. It is definitely a more comfortable option, but we feel that it does not give that sense of freedom, and it is also much more expensive. But again the decision is up to you.

The last option for traveling in New Zealand is by bus on an organized tour, which takes care of the organization of your trip, from arrival to departure.

A big bus with other travelers takes you from place to place, while what you have to worry about is booking accommodations and finding restaurants for some delicious food.

Tip: We booked our campervan for New Zealand on Motorhome Republic . We ended up choosing the provider Autosleepers and had a very good experience. They were comparably affordable, the campervan was in good condition for that price and the pick-up and drop-off were straightforward and easy.

Camping app for New Zealand

Probably the best comfort of a campervan is that you not only have a means of transportation on four wheels, but also your entire home. Now you just need to know where you’re going to stay for the day and where you’re going to spend the night.

There is an app for that.

A camping trip in New Zealand wouldn’t work so easily without probably the most important app called WikiCamps . Rarely have we been so happy to live in an age of smartphones and apps.

With WikiCamps you can filter all the places and find exactly what you need.

  • Where can I stay and cook during the day?
  • Where can I fill up the campervan’s water tank?
  • Where can I take a hot/cold shower?
  • Where can I stay overnight for free?
  • Where can I spend a paid night and charge the battery?

All this accompanied by numerous photos, ratings and reviews from a large camping community make planning so much easier and more enjoyable.

Free vs. Paid Camping

Depending on how well equipped your campervan is and how often or if at all you need to recharge the electricity, you can decide every day whether you want to spend the night on a free or paid camping site. At the free ones you often only have one toilet, which is not necessarily clean, while at the paid ones you have a clean toilet and a warm shower.

To save money, we used a paid campsite every 3-4 days, also to recharge the batteries of the equipment and the campervan. On the days with free camping, we took a shower on the way and refilled the water tank, both of which you can also easily find in the app.

Tip: There are also other apps that promise a similar offer. We can definitely recommend WikiCamps, even if the app is not perfect.

Best time to visit North Island, New Zealand

New Zealand is one of those places worth visiting practically any time of the year. In New Zealand, the seasons are the opposite of those we are used to. Consider the following overview.

  • September – November: Spring
  • December – February: Summer
  • March – May: Fall
  • June – August: Winter

Spring is the time when everything awakens to life, and the flowers at Lake Tekapo begin to bloom, which of course makes the environment even more beautiful and wonderful. And have we already mentioned the baby ducks and bunnies?

Summer has its advantages, of course, as the temperatures are warmer and you can definitely take a dip in one (or more) of New Zealand’s beautiful lakes.

Fall is a beautiful time when the trees and bushes take on wonderful, colorful hues, making the landscapes look gorgeous and the perfect environment for photography lovers

Winter in New Zealand can be a challenge and some attractions may be closed and access to the places mentioned in this post made difficult.

Most ‘western’ countries do not require a visa for New Zealand for 3 months (UK even 6 months). What you do need to do is fill out an application for NZeTA. The easiest way to do this is with the official app and you will be authorised to enter New Zealand in no time.

SIM Card for New Zealand

When it comes to SIM cards, it is important to us that we get a lot of data volume at a fair price and have good reception.
According to our research, the provider 2degrees had the best offer in New Zealand. We had a good experience during our stay and can definitely recommend it.

Unfortunately, in many places in New Zealand there is simply no internet, no matter what SIM card you choose, it can happen that the internet is limited or not there at all, the further away from the city the weaker the internet connection.

But don’t worry, you’ll experience the most beautiful moments in New Zealand off your smartphone anyway.
