5 Things to Do in Mui Ne, Vietnam

Muin Ne has become an increasingly popular destination among travelers for several years now. Especially backpackers who are looking for a place where they can stay for a few days. Forgetting completely about the world around, as Mui Ne is one of the most relaxed places in Vietnam.

The village gained its popularity thanks to the Sand Dunes, some of which are white and others red. They are located not far from the ocean and beaches, which is very unusual, even more so in the tropical climate of Vietnam.

In addition to the sand dunes, the village has several other attractions to offer, which you will learn about by reading this article.

Personal thoughts

The first clash with Mui Ne, unfortunately, was not positive for us. Our hotel, which was supposed to have a beach front, may have had access to the ocean. But before the construction of the wall which is separating the ocean from the houses located at the former beach.

Where is the beach?

Today there is only a small trace left of the beach, right in front of one of the largest resorts in the village.

Unfortunately, the rest of the hotels that offer beach front no longer have this beach front.

We were a little saddened by this, but nevertheless, we decided to get the most out of our stay in Mui Ne and visited some really nice places, relaxed a lot and ate delicacies in the local foodcourts.

We count the trip, despite the initial dissapointment, as a success and heartily recommend this place to you. Not because of the beach, but everything else Mui Ne has to offer.

We saw the amazing White and Red Sand Dunes, dipped our feet in the magical Fairy Steam, and watched local fishermen and their wives at work in the Fishing Village.

Mui Ne, despite being a small village, definitely deserves a visit.

Things to do in Mui Ne

#1 Admire the sunrise at White Sand Dunes

The White Dunes in Mui Ne are often the most popular reason why travelers are so eager to visit this village.

The dunes are large, and from the very top you get an amazing view of the surrounding endless sand, lake, large fields of greenery, and if you look closely, even the ocean.

The best time to visit this place is sunrise. When you have to climb to the top of the highest dune in still the dark, just to admire this natural spectacle a few moments later.

There is nothing unsafe about the walk, which takes about 20 minutes to reach the top. Of course, if you feel like going crazy on a quad – go for it. But it is definitely not as necessary as they want you to believe.

Tip: Don’t be fooled by the ATV vendors at the White Sand Dunes! They will tell you that you need an ATV ($25 for two people) to reach the top and well you that it’s too far and too dangerous to walk.

#2 Visit Red Sand Dunes

The second, slightly smaller dunes in Mui Ne are the Red Sand Dunes. Although not as spectacular as the White Sand Dunes, they are still worth a visit, if only for the sweeping views of the ocean from the top of the dunes.

If you are a fan of sledding, you can have a similar experience but on the sand here. On site friendly locals for a few dollars offer to rent a sand board, on which you will slide down the sand hot from the sun.

Tip: Leave your shoes in the car or pack them in your backpack, you definitely won’t need them at both Sand Dunes.

#3 Watch the fishermen in the fishing village

Just a few kilometers outside the city is a small fishing village with hundreds of colorful fishing boats. The smell of this place may not be one of the most pleasant, but watching the fishermen working is an interesting experience.

The best time to visit this place is just after sunrise, when the beach is filled with fresh catch and the local men and women are at work sorting out and selling fresh catch from the ocean.

#4 Put your feet in and walk in Fairy Stream

This amazing stream is located between the forest and the orange canyon. The play of colors in this place is absolutely amazing, in addition to green and orange you can also see shades of red and yellow here.

Just relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Walking along the stream forces you to leave your shoes at the entrance. Although at first walking barefoot may be a strange experience, after a while it becomes natural and very pleasant.

As you walk along the stream you will encounter several places where locals sell drinks and snacks. A short distance away you will find a bar and a zoo in one. However, this is an attraction we definitely do not encourage you to go do, due to the animals kept in captivity.

#5 Relax on the beach

Although the beach in Miu Ne is small and cramped by the construction of a protective wall, it can still be enjoyed on warm and sunny days.

If you are a fan of water sports then one of the most popular sports here is Kite Surfing, as well as jetskiing.

How to get to all the attractions

There are two ways to visit the aforementioned attractions.

The first is an organized tour, which starts early in the morning, as early as 4:30 AM, or at 1:30 PM. Depending on whether you’re going for sunrise or sunset. And the trip is taking place with an off-road vehicle.

You can choose to do the tour in a group, which is a cheaper option. But of course you have to adjust to the other participants and you don’t have the chance to spend as much time in each place as you might wish.

However, when you care about the budget option, this may be the ideal choice for you. An organized group tour costs $6.50 (VND 150’000)

If you don’t want to severely limit your time, choose a private tour. The price is slightly higher, but you don’t have to adjust to other participants.

The maximum number of people on a private tour is four. So if you travel with more people or meet someone on the spot with whom you share the same vibe, you can split the cost and travel even cheaper than the group tour.

The cost of a private tour is $21 (VND 500’000) for a maximum of four people.

The second way is to rent a scooter and explore all the places mentioned above on your own.

Scooter prices are reasonable, but the journey to the farthest destination takes about an hour. So before renting a vehicle consider whether you can get there. Roads are in good condition, but the streets are poorly lit in some places. If you know how to drive a scooter, this shouldn’t be a problem at all.

How to visit Mui Ne

The easiest way to get to Mui Ne is by sleeping bus, which arrives at the village from several other destinations and big cities like Ho Chi Minh City. Check your bus connetions to Mui Ne .

Getting around Mui Ne

If you want to explore the outskirts of the village, or plan to get to the above-mentioned destinations on your own, it would be best to rent a scooter or bicycle.

You can easily find rentals by walking down the main street in Mui Ne. In most cases, hotels will also help you rent a scooter.

Remember, however, that rentals often require you to leave your passport, which we are not the biggest fans of. So look for one that doesn’t, or find a trusted one with good reviews on Google.

Tip: In case you want to drive by yourself, keep in mind that you need an international driver’s license for Vietnam. Make sure to apply for it well in advance. Police checks on tourists are frequent and strict.

Where to stay in Mui Ne

Unfortunately, due to the construction of the promenade, which is designed to protect the buildings from flooding, many “Beach Front Resort” lost their beaches.

At the time of writing this article there is one resort that has beach access and that is Hoang Ngoc Beach Resort . If beach front is something you dream about, this resort may be perfect for you. The price, unfortunately, is not one of the lowest, but the hotel offers a high standard in return.

Remember however, before booking, check the comments on Google and booking to see if the beach front is still the case.

For those who do not care about the beach front, and those looking for a budget option, an ideal place would be Eva Hut Hostel . It  has private rooms and dorms, a large green space with many places to relax together and a bar.

And also a very friendly owner who is happy to help with booking tours, scooters and buses to your next amazing destination in Vietnam.
