If you are dreaming of a tropical vacation, days without looking at your watch over and over again, in an atmosphere of palm trees, white sand and turquoise sea, Isla Holbox is definitely something for you. Book at least a few days (in our opinion at least four) to relax on this beautiful island full of atmospheric bars, craft stores and some wonderful beaches.

Paradise Isla Holbox is located on the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, between Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. Holbox in Yucatec Maya means „black hole“. But don’t be fooled by the name because Holbox is everything opposite to the black hole. This paradise island is colorful and full of life. It is also part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve. There are no paved roads on the island, which makes you feel the beach life even more.

Enjoy the beach life and forget the world exists. Rent a bike and go to Punta Mosquito, a beautiful beach where the water far from the shore still reaches only to the waist. It is crystal clear and wonderfully blue. And don’t forget about Playa Punta Cocos, which is equally beautiful and much wider than Punta Mosquito. Both beaches are definitely less crowded than the main beach in Holbox, and in our opinion definitely more beautiful. Get a fresh magno from local seller, it tastes even better by the beach.

After that, ride around the city, stopping for juice or fresh and delicious tacos, and at the evening admire the magnificent sunsets at Pier (by the main beach). It was our favorite time of the day, with other tourists we admired the beautiful sunsets and each one seemed to get more beautiful than the one day before! We didn’t miss a single sunset during our stay, they were truly special moments.

Ferry

To get to Holbox Island you have to travel by ferry. The ferry leaves several times a day from the port in Chiquilá to Holbox and back. A ticket costs $10 (220 pesos) in one direction. You can also buy the Holbox ferry tickets online at 9 Hermanos . There are two companies that alternate every half hour. Our choice fell on 9 Hermanos by pure chance and we can recommend it.

Bike

Getting around Holbox Island is not difficult, as the island itself is not large, but you have several options to choose from.

There are no paved roads on the island, there is sand everywhere, and there are no cars, but don’t worry, this will be absolutely no obstacle. Everything in town is easily accessible on foot including lounges, restaurants, bars and stores all within walking distance.

However, if you want to get everywhere faster, our favourite option is a bke. The cost of a bke is not high with $7 (150 pesos) for the whole day and you can rent it in many places. You can pick it up at dawn and return it at sunset. It is also a great option when you want to go to Punta Mosquito or Punta Cocos which are a bit farther from the center. We rented our bikes at Bikes Holbox .

Golf cart

If cycling is not your thing you can also rent a golf cart. Prices start at $30 for 3 hours and go up to $100 for 24 hours. But we have also heard about slightly cheaper options. It probably depends on the rental company and the season. Don’t forget to bring your driver’s license, without it you can’t rent a golf cart!

Accommodation on the island of Holbox is a bit more expensive compared to the main land, but still there is something for everyone. We stayed in Villas Palmar Holbox and were super satisfied.
