7 Amazing Things to Do in Malta (incl. Valletta, Gozo & Comino)

Malta is an group of islands with 300 days of sunshine a year.

Sounds perfect, doesn’t it?

Situated in southern Europe, the islands are the perfect place for a holiday without the need for a long flight from Europe.

During our ten day stay we visited all three islands and with a clear conscience we can say that Malta is our favourite for a sunny vacation.

Things to do on Malta island

#1 Valletta

Valetta the tiny capital of Malta is the perfect place to stay and start your journey. Built of yellow stone, with colorful shutters and doors, we felt in love with it at first sight. The whole city of Valetta is also a Unesco world heritage site.

You don’t need to rent a car in Valetta, everything is easily accessible on foot. The city is not big and its most important points are within walking distance of each other.

Top sights in Valletta

  • Gate to Valetta
  • Titans Fountain
  • Upper Barakka Gardens (Relaxing and an amazing saluting battery everyday at 12 PM and 4 PM to enjoy from balcony (for free) or right next to saluting battery for $3 per person)
  • Lower Barakka Gardens (Greenery and beautiful view on Siege Bell War Memorial)
  • Republic Street (Shopping and souvenirs)
  • Merchant Street (Plenty of amazing restaurants and bars)

Valletta Food Tour

Do a food tour to get to know Malta from the delicious side.

We made the tour with Christian on Airbnb Experiences who was a perfect guide not only for the best restaurants and pubs but also for the most interesting sights of Valetta.

#2 Marsaxlokk

Marsaxlokk a tiny fishing village full of colorful boats that provide fresh fish for the whole island. The village is charming and the colorful boats make tourists want to visit this place, especially on Sundays when there is a weekly fish market.

From here, it’s the perfect opportunity to take one of those colorful boats to St. Peter’s Pool and jump into the clear water. The boat ride takes about 20-30 min each way. and the tour costs $10 per person both ways. Remember to arrange your pickup time ahead of time.

#3 Popeye Village

Popeye Village theme park was originally a movie set that was created for the Robin Williams movie of the same name. There is something for everyone in this park, we especially liked Olive’s house which looked like the real thing.

Bring your bathing suit with you, because in Poppeye Village there is also the possibility of jumping into the refreshing water, and for the more daring there are competitions organized.

Tip: There is a fee to enter the park but the view from the top of the cliff across from it is completely free and you will get the best picture.

#4 Mdina

Mdina other known as a silent city, for some of you Game of Thrones fans probably already known. In this city only a few cars are allowed to get in, so you will be able to walk around the city without any problem.

Mdina is also one of our favourite places on the island of Malta, full of tiny, quiet streets, atmospheric cafés and flowers.

#6 Things to do on Gozo island

Gozo island is the second largest of the three islands and is ideal for one or two days trip. To get to the island you need to take a ferry from the main island of Malta.

The best means of transport around the island is to rent a car, it gives the opportunity to visit a large number of attractions, and these are not few on this charming island.

We rented a car in Malta, drove to the port, took a ferry to Gozo, which took only about 45 minutes. Once we arrived in Gozo we were fully mobile.

Top sights on Gozo island:

  • Azurre Window (Which unfortunately collapsed in 2017 but still attracts tourists, probably just because everyone wants to see with their own eyes that the window no longer exists.
  • Wied il-Mielah Window (Definitely a less popular window on the island of Gozo. It is not easily accessible, which is probably why not many tourists choose to visit this place.)
  • Salt pans (Place where salt is produced and harwest once a week!)

Ferry price is $20 for two people and a car, payable on return to the main island of Malta. Price for car was also $20 per day rent on Valetta airport.

Looking for another unforgettable Gozo experience? Explore the island by boat on a day trip.

#7 Things to do on Comino island

Comino is the smallest of Malta’s three islands. However, you should not miss it during your vacations, because despite its small size it is certainly the least populated island.

It is offering unforgettable views and beautiful turquoise water.

  • The most popular Blue Lagoon is of course the most crowded, so if you want to rent a beach chair you have to be on the island from early morning hours. The water crystal clear, has a beautiful turquoise color and a perfect temperature!

Also worth visits are:

  • Crystal Lagoon
  • Santa Maria Caves

How to get to Comino

Nothing easier than that. If you are staying in Valletta just take a bus from Valletta bus station, to the Comino ferry station, and from there the ferry towards Comino. Cost for ferry is $13 per person both ways.

Another nice way to visit Comino is as a day trip on a boat.

How to visit Malta

Getting around in the capital Valetta is really simple, you can just walk around and you will find all the places you want to see in the beautiful city. The cheapest way to get to all the places outside Valletta is by bus. To save some money, we recommend to buy a Tallinja Explore bus card . We for example took the one for 7 days unlimited travel which was $23 (€21) per person. You can also pay by credit card for single rides in case you prefer this option more.

But you can also rent a car which was in our case $25 per day. Of course the price waries depending on your car prefferences. We took the smallest and cheapest car.

If you like more comfort, you can also always book a ride with Uber or Bolt to explore the whole Malta.

We recommend however to move around the main island of Malta by bus, and rent a car only to go to Gozo. This option is definitely cheaper, and better for our environment. You can find the bus schedule either on Google Maps or on their own app.

Best time to visit

You can visit Malta the whole year, because the weather is nice even in the winter, however if you want to get some tan, we recommend to visit Malta from June till September.

Where to stay in Malta

Although Malta is a very small country, the question of where to stay depends on what you mainly want to experience during your stay.

Valletta

Valletta, the capital of Malta is in our opinion the best place to book your accommodation. Here you have numerous sights, a variety of restaurants and bars and also a small city beach to refresh yourself in the cool water from the summer heat.

St. Julian’s & Paceville

St. Julian’s with its associated neighborhood Paceville is the ideal place if you are mainly looking for long party nights. This is where young people gather and party into the morning. Besides, here you also have many restaurants to fill your stomach and a small sandy beach for some relaxing.

Mellieħa

The ideal destination if you are mainly looking for relaxation and want to be close to the most beautiful places on the main island of Malta. From here you can enjoy some sun at Mellieha Bay or Ghadira Bay in the immediate vicinity. On the opposite side of the island and about 30 minutes away by bus you will find other beautiful sandy beaches, namely Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha Bay.

From Mellieħa you can also travel more easily to the two other islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino.

Gozo

Although most visitors to Malta tend to visit the second largest island of Gozo as a day trip, you can also spend more time here. For a stay we would recommend the capital city Victoria or Nadur. From here you can visit all the beautiful sights of this island and enjoy the stunning beaches of San Blas Beach and especially Ramla Bay.

The bonus here is that the island of Comino is also very close and definitely worth a visit.

Travel costs for Malta

The prices are per person, except for the taxi and the accommodation and car, which we rent for 2 people.
