Next to Sarajevo, Mostar is just as, if not much more, one of the most popular destinations in Bosnia-Herzegovina. No wonder, because especially the charming old town is enchanting and convinces every visitor of its charm.

Just under two and a half hours from Sarajevo is the beautiful, idyllic Mostar. It also suffered a lot during the Yugoslavian war, but today it is full of joie de vivre and wonderful people. We were lucky enough to get an apartment right by the old town thanks to Airbnb. No two-three minute walk was needed to be in the middle of it all and experience local life up close.
We will never forget how incredibly beautiful it was. Even though we were very tired from the day, we were still able to motivate ourselves and took a short trip to the old town to experience it in the evening. All the lights shone the old walls in their beauty, plus live music played, which made the whole moment even more breathtaking.
After the war, nothing is as it used to be. Mostar is divided until today. Despite its great popularity with tourists, the city is divided into two camps. On the western bank of the river lives the catholic Croat majority and in the east the Muslims.
Despite these, we must say that we did not feel any of this during our stay on the ground. No matter where we were, people were always friendly and accommodating. Even when we spoke Croatian with them and we got into deeper conversations, everyone was always cordial to us.
As is so often the case when traveling. Once there, the world is always much more in order. As in Sarajevo, Bosnia remains a great memory for us after our Balkan road trip. The people in this country are simply wonderful.
Mostar itself is small and relatively manageable. At least the old town, which is the destination of many visitors in most cases. Therefore, a one-day trip on site with an overnight stay is optimal. The time is enough to see and experience everything in a relaxed way.
You should definitely experience the beauty of the old town in the evening as well as during the day. Both have their own special charm and are incredibly fascinating. Don’t miss the brave guys from Stari Most (Old Bridge) jumping into the Neretva river. Don’t forget to donate something to them before the brave act.
Besides this main sight, you can get probably the most delicious ice cream in the world at almost every corner in Mostar for about $2 – $3.
Simply delicious!
The many larger and smaller cafes and restaurants invite you to linger. Also here you can have delicious Ćevapi for just under $8.
Mostar is now very famous thanks to social networks like Instagram. Every year, numerous visitors come to experience the beauty of the city for themselves. And quite rightly so. We don’t know anyone who hasn’t been fascinated by Mostar.
Also, we can say with great conviction that you will love it too. Be it the local people, the city with its special charm or simply both. Mostar is a jewel in Bosnia and the Balkans waiting to be discovered by you.
Prices are per person, except for the accommodation, which we rent for 2 people.
