6 Best Things to Do in Osaka, Japan

Osaka, one of the names you hear very often in connection with Japan’s metropolises. If you’re already visiting the Far East and touring Japan, The third largest city can’t be left off your list. Just under an hour away from Kyoto, the world-famous Osaka enchants visitors with its big-city flair and similar charm to Tokyo.

Things to do in Osaka

Traveling is one of those things. When you see the first temple, you are enchanted. The second and third may fascinate you just the same. But at some point you have seen enough temples. It’s the same with big cities. In Tokyo we looked at as many corners as possible, in Osaka we only wanted to concentrate on the essentials. Here are the things we would regret not having seen.

#1 Dōtonbori district

The Dōtonbori district is one of the most famous places in Osaka and a tourist magnet. Rightly so, because the district fascinates visitors with its own presence. Many bars and restaurants have settled here and attract masses of visitors.

#2 Ebisu Bridge

If you are already in Dōtonbori, of course a walk over the Ebisu Bridge with the view of the Dōtonbori Canal can’t be missed.

#3 Kaiyūkan Aquarium

The Kaiyūkan Aquarium is one of the largest aquariums in the world and simply breathtaking! 2’300 ¥ or just under $19 you get to enjoy almost 30’000 animals to look at and partly touch. You should plan enough time, because the aquarium is really big. Around 3-4 hours should be planned, so that you do not come unnecessarily in stress.

#4 Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel

How about a ride on the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel? On the way to the aquarium you can walk past it and take advantage of the opportunity to see Osaka from above and enjoy the view.

#5 Ōsaka Castle

The Ōsaka Castle, similar in design to Hiroshima Castle, is quite different from the rest of Osaka and with the Osaka Castle Park in front of it is a nice change from the rest of the big city.

#6 Universal Studios Japan

Personally, we were looking for something completely different in Japan. Different from all the temples visited and the crazy big cities. We were looking for real adventure, for the next adrenaline rush. And we found it.

Oh my god, and how we found it!

At Universal Studios Japan we found the most awesome roller coaster! With 7’400 ¥, which is about $60, you get rid of a small fortune for the entrance. But believe us, every cent is worth it! The park is only half as big as the Europa Park in Germany, but it can easily keep up with the roller coasters. In our opinion, the roller coaster called The Flying Dinosaur is the best roller coaster ever!

Is Osaka worth visiting?

Definitely! Of course, Tokyo is even bigger, more voluminous and overwhelming. But Osaka is just as fascinating and doesn’t have to hide at all. Relatively close and easily accessible by train, you are quickly in Kyoto or Nara Park. In general, we had the feeling that Osaka is one step more relaxed and at the same time just as much of a metropolis. With all the above sights you can easily plan 2 days and enjoy an indescribably exciting and adrenaline-filled time.
